Nelson & Handrigan Win Third Shier’s Title

Rick Nelson and John Handrigan held off Joe Conway and Braedon Cryderman to win their third Shier’s Better Ball championship. The steady pair followed up their opening round 67 with a smooth 64, while Conway & Cryderman improved from 69 to 65 but couldn’t catch the leaders and finished 3 shots back. Howie Pfeiffer and Jim Clelland won the Black Fly flight net prize, shooting 68 and 72 for a pair of net 61’s, total 122.

In the Mosquito flight Levinsky & Houde tied Stevens & Matthews and won by retrogression, with both teams at 149. Davey & Hutch won the Mosquito net with 124.

Burke Delanty and Paul Evans shot 82 & 69 to lap the field with a 10 stroke victory in the Deer Fly flight. Ted Dean and Ryan Venturelli took net honours in the flight with 82/80 for a net 117.

Raynor & Hammond were the overall net winners shooting 79 & 77 for a net score of 116. They also won the John Shier trophy for the low net round on Sunday, at 57.

Competition is Close at 2010 Shier’s Better Ball

After the first round of play in the 2010 Shier’s Better Ball there are log-jams at the top of the leaderboards of all three divisions.

Perennial contenders John Handrigan and Rick Nelson shot 67 to lead Jim Clelland and Howie Pfeiffer by 1, with 2 other teams tied for third at 69.

In the second flight three teams are tied for the lead at 75 with another 1 shot back at 76.

And in third flight, there is a four-way tie at 82.

Brier & Evans lead the net scoring competition after a first round 74 for net 56. Several other teams registered net scores below 60.

The final round promises to be an exciting finish as these teams jockey for top spot in what may be difficult playing conditions. Stay tuned for final results later today.

Muskoka KIA Early Bird Results

The 2010 Muskoka KIA early Bird tournament took place this past Saturday with fantastic summer weather and a field of 110 enthusiastic golfers. The event featured 2 player teams playing 9 holes of scramble and 9 holes of modified alternate shot with divisions for men, ladies, mixed and junior teams.

This year June Church and Pat Paterson won the Ladies event with a one stroke margin over Annette Allen & Christine Meeks. In the Mixed, Jim and Debbie Todd edged Ken & Lori Fay, by less than half a stroke – 66.2 vs 66.4.

Jesse and Al Helmer shot 68 for net 64.2 to capture the Men’s Division, just .6 strokes  ahead of Terry Nicholls and partner Jon Cleator. The Junior  Division was won by Mitchell Augustine and new member Kurtis Gammon as they scored 67.6, comfortably ahead of runners up Graham Finch and Austin Maher who finished with 71.0 .
